5 California Beaches Named ‘Most Beautiful’ in the West. Here’s Where to Go

Searching for a spectacular sandy beach? Californians don’t have to look too far.

The Golden State is home to five of the most stunning beaches on the West Coast, according to Sunset magazine.

The publication recently ranked the most beautiful beaches in California as part of its 2025 Sunset Travel Awards.

“From the coast to the mountains to the desert and beyond, the West is where travelers can live life to the fullest,” the magazine said, with awards given to “the most transporting experiences in this beautiful place we call home.”

Here’s who made the list:

These were the “most stunning” sandy getaways on the West Coast in 2025, according to Sunset magazine:

• Avila Beach
• Carlsbad
• Montecito
• Pismo Beach
• Ventura County coast

What Makes These Beaches ‘Most Beautiful’ in California?

Sunset said it selected California’s best beaches based on year-round sunshine, gorgeous ocean views and ample activities that range from relaxing to adventurous.

The magazine highlighted Avila Beach’s pleasant microclimate and “adorable” shops where visitors have opportunities to shop and go wine tasting.

More daring vacationers can rent kayaks or hop on a whale-watching excursion, Sunset said.

Pismo Beach nabbed a spot on the list due to its lush landscape and wide variety of things to do, including wandering through rolling dunes.

“Outdoor enthusiasts can surf near the Pismo Pier, dig for Pismo clams, kayak through Dinosaur Caves or hike the scenic trails of the Pismo Preserve,”Sunset said.

In addition, Sunset showcased Carlsbad’s “pristine beaches,” which are paired with phenomenal surf breaks, pretty flower fields and miles of hiking trails.

The publication also praised Montecito as a “glamorous neighbor to Santa Barbara,” and said the Ventura area offers “low-key beach bliss.”

“Timeless California coastal living can be found in the four distinct towns of Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Oxnard and Ventura,” Sunset said.

How Did Sunset Magazine Choose Travel Award Winners?

After receiving hundreds of submissions, a panel of Sunset Magazine editors picked where to go, what to do, where to stay and where to eat and drink on the West Coast.

In 2025, the magazine said, it expanded its list to 200 winners “in response to the sheer volume of standout entries.”
