Hands up if you love a wedding gag (especially if it’s a surprise for the bride)? You, over there in the back, raise your hand; we know you live for it! Because we do, too. There is so, so much to do when planning for a wedding, and so much stress involved, that you can’t blame the groom for wanting to snatch back the reins for a brief moment in order to inject some fun into the proceedings. And that’s exactly what happened during Melissa Baker and Brad Hewitt’s wedding at the Old Courthouse in downtown Cleveland.
As the former Sports Illustrated model took to the dance floor with her new husband, the DJ prepared the music for their first dance as a married couple. Their chosen song? “Like There’s No Yesterday,” by the bride’s favorite country music icon, Mark Wills. Wills, for the uninitiated, is an American country star who has clocked 16 singles on the Billboard country charts and was even inducted into membership of the Grand Ole Opry on Jan. 11, 2019.
Baker handles it well, smiling the entire time, and her husband keeps the secret under wraps by comforting his wife with kisses while the musician onstage gets ready. Baker steps back into her husband’s arms and their song begins again; the “live version,” this time. That’s the exact moment Baker gets the surprise of her life. Hewitt turns his bride around so that the stage is in her full view, and who does she see? Mark Wills himself, guitar in hand, mic at the ready.
“Oh my God!” Baker screams, as she runs toward the back of the room in shock. The room explodes with delighted laughter and the flashes of cameras capturing the moment of Baker’s realization for posterity, before the blushing bride regains her composure (amid copious tears, of course), and grips her husband tight for the remainder of their romantic dance together. There’s barely a dry eye in the house.
Wills treated the wedding guests to a private performance lasting over an hour. Be sure to watch the video for yourself; it’s a whirlwind of emotions and celebrates a moment that Baker will never, ever forget!
