CALGARY, Canada—“I’ve never seen any show in the last 10 years that has such a strength of youth,” exclaimed artist and professor Kim Huynh, referring to the youth and skill of the Shen Yun Performing Arts dancers.

Ms. Huynh, an associate professor who teaches drawing, colour media, and studio practice in the Faculty of Art at the University of Calgary, attended the second of three shows at Calgary’s Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Monday night.

Chinese classical dance is the hallmark of Shen Yun’s performances, an art form that is both ancient and broad in its scope. Shen Yun is leading a revival of this art and the dancers undergo rigorous training to achieve the technical perfection necessary to perform—something not lost on Ms. Huynh.

“I expect that all of these young people have many years of training in Chinese classical art. I think the craft, the technique, it’s so solid,” she said.

Combining the traditional with the modern, Shen Yun incorporates an animated high-tech backdrop behind the dancers projecting ancient landscapes and themes, adding a unique dimension and context to the performances.

“The background is great,” said Ms. Huynh. “The use of media is fantastic. ... The media, the slides, the digital screen is fantastic. I think the medium using the images on the screen is the best. I think it’s so smart.”

Shen Yun performances involve many dancers performing in unison to achieve a display of harmony and cohesiveness.

“The grouping and the composition, that is how these dancers and actors are moving on the stage is fantastic,” said Ms. Huyhn.

Shen Yun will play one more show in Calgary and then continue on to Vancouver for the last of its Canadian shows this season. Shen Yun’s two other equally large companies are currently touring in Europe and Asia. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org.
