A Staten Island woman lost her engagement ring in the trash after making meatloaf, and had to dig through piles of trash to retrieve it.
Tiffany Otterbeck, 35, took off her ring and put it in paper towel when making meatloaf, and only realized the next day that her ring was missing. By then, the trash truck had picked up their trash from yesterday.
In a panic, Otterbeck called the department of sanitations. A supervisor told the truck that had picked up her trash to stop and dump its cargo in a safe area.
“He was like, ‘I hope that was some really good meatloaf,” Otterbeck remembers him joking, she told ABC News. “I told him, ‘If you find my rings I’ll make a loaf just for you.'”
Otterbeck was told to wear “old cloth,” and she and her husband wore sanitation gear. Five sanitation workers were also sent to help them try to find the ring.
It only took them 45 minutes to find the ring, which was lost in 7 tons of trash.
“I was relieved. I was just so happy,” Otterbeck said. “I can’t believe I lost them. I hope to pass them down to my daughters one day. It was crazy, and I was so touched by the fact that these men really helped us. They weren’t obligated to help. They went above and beyond and I'll never be able to think of meatloaf the same way ever again.”
