‘We look forward to it every year,’ Says Law Firm Owner

VANCOUVER—It is the spirit, the magic, and the values presented in Shen Yun Performing Arts that keeps lawyer Lee Cowley coming back year after year.

Mr. Cowley, who founded law firm Cowley & Company, saw Shen Yun at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Saturday, his fifth time experiencing the performance.

“I love everything about it,” he said after the Jan. 25 matinee.

“We look forward to it every year—there’s always something new.”

Mr. Cowley worked as a chiropractor and acupuncturist for 15 years before studying law. He worked with the Provincial Crown as a criminal prosecutor before starting his own firm, which has grown to 40 staff members in the last 14 years and has four branches throughout the lower mainland.

He said the traditional Chinese values and spirituality expressed through Shen Yun’s story-based dances make the experience rich and meaningful.

“It gives it more value rather than just simply a show—it gives you more to think about,” he said. “It enhances the program.”

New York-based Shen Yun was formed in 2006 by overseas Chinese artists who wished to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.

After seeing the performance five times Mr. Cowley continues to marvel at China’s ancient, mysterious, and colourful history.

“There’s so much tradition in it and its just so interesting,” he said.

“It’s fascinating when you think of how short our culture is in North America. There’s just no comparison—just extraordinary is what it is.”
