Valentine's Day Treat

Fluffy and delicious French toast accompanied by a rich strawberry cream cheese dip makes for a memorable culinary experience to share with that special someone on Valentine’s Day.

Makes 2 to 3 servings

125 mL (1/2 cup) half and half cream
2 eggs
15 mL (1 1/2 tsp) vanilla
Orange zest from half an organic orange
Loaf of day-old French bread, unsliced
25 mL (2 tbsp) confectioners’ sugar, sifted
Fresh strawberries, optional

Mix together the cream, eggs, vanilla and zest in shallow dish. Cut the French loaf into 2.5 cm (1-inch) slices. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out as many shapes as possible from each slice. The size of the cutter will determine how many pieces you get.

Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture for a few seconds to let the mixture absorb into the bread; turn over and repeat.

Heat butter or vegetable oil in a large frying pan and fry the dipped bread until golden and crisp. Turn over and cook the other side. Remove French toast from frying pan. Sprinkle confectioners’ sugar on top of each piece and serve with strawberry cream cheese dip and fresh strawberries.
