HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—As a designer of theatrical costumes, Ms. Miller, the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour presentation at Von Braun Center Concert Hall on February 7, transcended ordinary entertainment.

The show was more than expected, inspiring fresh ideas for her own production, she said. “Oh yes, I just ... I just love it, I mean I love everything. The color combinations are beautiful, and it’s things I wouldn’t have thought of doing myself, so I’m going to use it for inspiration for some of the things that I’m going to be doing later. It’s beautiful.”

Founded upon the spirit of an ancient culture, DPA brings to life classical dance and music in a gloriously colorful show, its masterful choreography and graceful routines range from grand classical processions to ethnic folk dances.

“I loved the fans, the pink fans were beautiful [Welcoming Spring], and I’ve learned so much. The colors are absolutely fabulous.”

Story-based dances are an integral part of the New York-based production, and in this segment the warmth of spring is a warm blessing after a cold, hard winter. Quick movements and stunning bursts of color form the basis of the women’s fan dance, marking a season represented richly in China’s folk dance tradition.

Audiences gasp at times when the curtain goes up revealing gorgeously costumed dancers, and loud applause bursts out during some dance pieces. State-of-the-art technology adds to the sense of awe with spectacular vistas of celestial palaces and sprawling plains, while orchestral music combines the best of Western and Eastern composition, matching perfectly the scene at hand.

“I love that too. I only wish we could use that with the theater group that we’re with, and I’m getting some ideas for that too. Oh, the music is absolutely beautiful, and I enjoyed the emcees, they’re so funny. I love it. And everyone’s so nice, it’s so nice. It’s beautiful.”

Each program is introduced by announcers that create a comfortable ambiance.

“Yes, I didn’t know what to expect when we got here. And my little girl, she’s just loving it, she’s having such a good time. I can’t wait to come back next year. I’m planning to come back.”

In fact, she said anyone who hadn’t seen the show should come.

“It’s absolutely beautiful, and I can’t wait to see it again. I would like to see a lot of children come. Next year I plan to bring some of the children from the theater group to see this, because I think that they can learn a lot from your actors and your dancers. The choreography is absolutely fabulous, and we may come and take note of things...”

That’s been the overwhelming response to DPA shows that ended this evening with a standing ovation.
