SYDNEY, Australia—The director of a Sydney theatre congratulated the Shen Yun Performing Arts Company for bringing Chinese culture to Australia after seeing Sydney’s Friday night show at the Parade Theatre.
Mr. Carpenter saw the show with actor and friend Ms. Brown, and said he was particularly interested in some of the Chinese stories he saw, such as The Monkey King Triumphs.
“I think it’s terrific that you’re bringing Chinese culture to Australia, I think there should be more of it,“ Mr. Carpenter said. ”As a director of an Australian theatre company we’re very interested in Chinese stories now.
“I’m particularly interested in the Monkey King. And it was interesting to hear the child from the audience yell out the Chinese name of the Monkey King. Because this is the story that we’re interested in doing and we’re planning to do here.”
Mr. Carpenter also liked the opening piece, The Five Millennia Begin.
“I liked the beginning, we both liked the beginning where it showed many skills with the dance, the drumming, the gestures, the acrobatics.”
His friend Ms. Brown loved the dancer’s costumes.
“I like all the beautiful costumes and the colours,” she said. “It was all very subtle and beautiful combinations of colour and beautifully made.
“It was wonderful to see the dancers move in these beautiful costumes,” Ms. Brown said. “I think they’re terrific, they’re wonderful, and they’re very beautiful as well. Very handsome young men and very beautiful young girls.”
Both are former students of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, and Mr. Carpenter said he hoped more students from the institute would come and appreciate Shen Yun.
“It’s great to see a company like this here at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts,” he said. “I hope the students here today see these performers to get a cultural context.”
Shen Yun Performing Arts will return to Sydney’s Parade Theatre on April 25 and 26.
