TAIPEI, Taiwan—Su Rui-ping, former curator of Taipei Fine Arts Museum was among the audience members fascinated by the magnificent performance presented by Shen Yun Performance Arts World Company on the afternoon of March 17, 2016 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
“I am deeply moved by Shen Yun Performing Arts as it promotes Chinese culture to the entire world,” said Ms. Su, after she attended Shen Yun for the third year.
“It [Shen Yun] promotes traditional culture in modern times through performances of ancient legends, such as the stories of famous Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi and the ”Lady of the Moon,“ as well as traditional dances in Mongolia and Gansu areas.”
“I think the dance depicting the story of calligrapher Wang Xizhi [”Poets of the Orchid Pavilion"] is really great because the strength of the fans and the tumbling techniques performed by the dancers are remarkable. They are something different from ballet. I’ve also learned folk dances, but the strength and smoothness in their jumping are something that I’ve never seen.”
“I was truly touched to see our Chinese culture being promoted to the world over by Shen Yun. Let’s further work on it with positive and active attitude.”
To further promote Chinese culture from generation to generation, she urges younger generation to see Shen Yun. She said, “In addition to Academy Awards ceremony, students in Taipei should save money to see Shen Yun.”
Shen Yun Music Unique
Professor Fu-Chien Cho, chair of the Department of Music and acting director of the Institute of Performing Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts also marveled at Shen Yun’s 2016 premiere in Taiwan. After seeing the performance, he praised, “From the very beginning to the end, it [Shen Yun] was perfect. In particular, the plots of the dances and the digital backdrops were indeed very impressive.”
Referring to the music that accompanied the show live, Professor Cho said, “I felt the music very profound.” “Shen Yun’s music is full of verities.” “The composition and style of Shen Yun music are very unique.”
He also highly spoke of Milen Nachev, conductor of the Shen Yun Orchestra that is composed of Eastern and Western musical instruments. He said, “He made the entire performance flawless. He is really remarkable.”
Deeply Touched
Seeing the Shen Yun performance on the same day, Professor Yung-Wen Tsai, professor of the Department of Music and former dean of College of Performing Arts of National Taiwan University of Arts, was deeply touched by the overall performance too. “What we have appreciated is not only its superb technique; there are also humanistic concerns illustrated in the form of artistic performances. As a result, they are very touching, as if they were something happening in the surroundings of our daily lives. This kind of performance can heal and inspire people’s hearts. And this is something very important.”
In terms of the direction of artistic creation inspired by Shen Yun performances, Professor Tsai noted, “Shen Yun has ushered in a new direction [for performing arts]. Through the performances transcending the boundaries of time and space, it can resonate with the audience. I believe this will be the trend in the future around the world.”
Deeply touched by the seamless performance of the Shen Yun Orchestra, that blends Eastern and Western musical instruments, he highly praised its conductor’s performance. He said, “I would like here especially commend the conductor for his perfect control of timing. Only after the orchestra has perfect timing and pace can the performance on the stage be smooth and harmonious.”
“We have studied quite a lot of historic stories. But when looking at them from the perspective of education, they might not really resonate with people’s hearts,” “Shen Yun is the art that can directly touch people’s heart,” said Professor Tsai.
He added, “I believe today’s performance should have deeply touched many people and inspired their consciences from the bottom of their hearts. It might be hard for them to express what they are, but they do know what they are in their minds. The silent transforming influence exerted in this way is powerful.”
Professor Tsai concluded, “The 30 students attending this Shen Yun show should have learned how to demonstrate the sincerest and kindest part of human nature by means of arts in the future.”
