SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—A family came to the San José Center for the Performing Arts for the matinee session on May 16 to see Shen Yun Performing Arts’ unique portrayal of traditional Chinese culture. It presents China’s rich 5,000-year-old civilization through stories, myths and legends employing Chinese classical dance, an orchestra with Western and Chinese instruments, state of the art digital backdrops, and master solo singers.
Spinal surgeon, Guy, and his wife, Nora, a homeschooling mother, and their two children, Yasmin and Julianna, and their aunt, Catherine, were happy to speak about the show.
Nora said, “It was wonderful. Every aspect of it was wonderful—singing, dancing, costumes, and instruments.”
And Julianna piped up and said, “Entertaining, we liked it.” While Yasmin said it was “really cool” and that it was all good.
Guy said he liked it very much. “The costumes were very vibrant. My favorite was probably the drums and the water scene [Nymphs of the Sea]. It was beautiful.” He also said that the music was “excellent.”
The Shen Yun orchestra brings together two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western, in a masterful fusion. With Western instruments as its foundation, the orchestra brings out Chinese musical flair through a variety of Chinese instruments. All of the music the orchestra plays is original and composed to fit with each dance.
Aunt Catherine, found the performance “interesting” saying that it was “different from anything I have ever seen before.”
Guy found the spiritual aspect of the show “interesting,” commenting on the solo singers and the words of the songs that were displayed in English on the backdrop.
