Superman: Earth One, DC Comics’ much anticipated graphic novel, had an exclusive sneak eight page preview on Slash Film yesterday, Oct. 25.

The limited series is part of the new line of Earth One comics, aimed at reinventing fans’ favorite characters as 21st century young adults.

Written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Shane Davis, the novel retells Superman’s origin, portraying the Man of Steel as a 21-year-old looking for meaning in the digital age.

The newly-released images have met a mixed reception, with website ScreenCrave describing the moody young superhero as “emo” and “angsty,” dressed in a hooded jacket with smoldering red eyes and untidy hair.

“We wanted to tell a story that’s hip, sexy and moody,” DC Comics’ co-publisher Dan DiDio told the New York Post. “We wanted to show a younger Superman at the early stages of his career, struggling with his identity and his place. He realizes he doesn’t belong anywhere and doesn’t fit in.”

The hardcover graphic novel is due for release in comic shops tomorrow, Oct. 27, and in bookstores next Tuesday, Nov. 2.
