Waking up early may not be the first idea that comes to mind when you think about summer. But whether you’re in charge of getting your kids off to camp before you head to work, or playing camp counselor to your brood, waking up early gives you some time all to yourself. It could even prove to be your favorite part of summer.
So, you might ask, how early are we talking? That depends on your family.
What you’re aiming for is a sufficient chunk of time before anyone else wakes up, while your home is still and quiet, and you can bask in intentional and rejuvenating solitude before the day begins.
Here are seven activities to consider for your early morning routine this summer.
Unplug
Let’s first highlight what you don’t want to do. You don’t want to pick up your phone first thing in the morning and waste away your precious morning time by scrolling through social media, checking email, texting, or other energy-sucking online activities. Stay away from digital screens during this time.Ideally, your devices will have been tucked away the night before in a different room, reducing the temptation to just “check really quickly.” We all know how that ends.
Be Still
Whether it’s through prayer, meditation, or simply sitting in silence, still your mind and body. Take time to center yourself, embrace calmness, ask for guidance, or look within. Remind yourself what’s most important to you.Journal
Take old-fashioned pen to paper and write down your thoughts. Listing at least three things you are grateful for each morning can be a powerful exercise. This is also a good time to define your vision for the day or make a simple to-do list. Perhaps you’ve got something on your mind that you need more clarity on. Getting your ideas onto paper can provide the perspective you’re looking for.
