HOUSTON—“I feel every emotion possible,” said painter Corey Morgan after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts. “There were times when I was tearing up, there was time when I felt angry for the people. There were times when I felt happy and I was laughing.”

Mr. Morgan saw a performance with Lauren Martin, a freelance photographer, at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts on Dec. 27. He said he felt an emotional connection, a spiritual connection, and definitely a connection to the goddess depicted in the performance finale. “You literally cannot get better than this performance, especially to show everything that it shows.”

By everything, he meant not only the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, but how it was once nearly lost and still not allowed in China today.

“I mean, the emotions behind it, the travesty they have gone through, the sense of being the people ... bringing back to life something that is being lost,” Mr. Morgan said. “It is really emotional; it is really deep.”

Mr. Morgan and Ms. Martin were deeply affected seeing New York-based Shen Yun revive a culture that was almost destroyed by the communist regime in China.

“When they deprive a culture of actually being known or having an understanding of it, we need to stop doing that, as a people,” he said.

Ms. Martin said it was “trying to erase the history book and act like a culture didn’t exist when it actually has a lot of influence on the regions around it and the whole world.”

“You cannot just act like that never happened,” Ms. Martin said.

Mr. Morgan said he did not even know there was such oppression going on and said it was horrible because of the effects and impact this has had.

“The persecution of that culture specifically. I mean nowadays, knowing that they cannot meditate or doing anything like that. ... That’s how they center themselves and become one with the Earth ...  The Chinese culture has an impact all over the world. And the fact that they are trying to oppress that, is really sad. Because they have had a giant influence,” Mr. Morgan said.

“[Shen Yun is] getting back to the root. It is amazing ... it really does hit home with me though,” He said. “It is perfect. I have no other way to say it other than that. It is perfectly replicated. And I love it.”

“It is entertaining, and it is emotional, it is a full-spiritual connection with this performance, and it is amazing,” Mr. Morgan said.
