MILWAUKEE, Wis.—Dance instructor Angelica Robb is originally from Colombia and, since moving to the U.S. eight years ago, has been working to keep Latin dance traditions alive.

After attending Shen Yun Performing Arts’ evening show at the Miller High Life Theatre on Feb. 3, she resonated deeply with the artists’ mission to bring back traditional culture.

“I’m a dancer myself, and [the show] was mind-blowing. The way they can put together the culture and the traditions and never [lose] their touch and technique even with traveling time—It’s just wonderful. I’m just so happy,” she expressed.

“I recognized the value of bringing your own culture and dance and sharing that with the world. That’s why I appreciate [Shen Yun] so much, because I see what they’re doing.”

For its 2024 touring season, Shen Yun’s eight equally-sized companies will be performing in over 200 cities across five continents.

Met with wide acclaim since its establishment in 2006, the company can be expected to return each year with a brand-new set of choreography and musical compositions.

Ms. Robb is “super impressed” by the difficulty and beauty of classical Chinese dance.

“I was impressed by what the presenters mentioned, that some of the acrobatics and [arial] techniques actually [originated] from Chinese dance and not the other way around,” she expressed, adding that the skill of all the dancers was very impressive because it requires a lot of practice.

Based in New York, Shen Yun artists are highly trained in classical Chinese dance. Dating back thousands of years, it is one of the most athletic and expressive art forms in the world.

According to the company’s website, the classical Chinese dance we see in China today is heavily mixed with military and modern dance styles. Only at Shen Yun can you find it performed in its purest form—how it was originally passed down through the generations.
“I think not all people recognize the high level of skill that is required to do what [Shen Yun dancers] are doing here,” Ms. Robb added.

“You see traditional dance moves, that’s one thing, but combined with your culture, the jumps, the acrobatics, and the energy that you transmit when you tell the story—it’s not just dancing, you’re telling a story—that’s why it’s so appealing.”
