NEWARK, N.J.—Steve Popp saw Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 30, 2026, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Mr. Popp works for the Department of Homeland Security. He had seen Shen Yun during its first season, and 20 years later, he came back to experience it again.

“It was all good—the whole thing. It was my second time coming. I was here 20 years ago, the first one. It’s like night and day,” he said.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is on a mission to present “China before communism” and to revive people’s connection to 5,000 years of Chinese civilization and culture.

“ I love the traditional aspects of it. And I always find it very enchanting. The whole performance is … very peaceful,” Mr.  Popp said.

Mr. Popp shared that Shen Yun was “really lovely.”

“It’s definitely worthwhile.  Everyone should come see at least once,” he said.

Felix Hernandez was also in the audience for this matinee performance.

Mr. Hernandez shared that he enjoyed seeing a different culture.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

Mr. Hernandez was impressed by the dancers’ synchronicity.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The technology’s versatility allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“It was amazing. It was so fast, I don’t know how they do it,” expressed Mr. Hernandez, a dentist.

The Shen Yun Orchestra, which tours with Shen Yun, is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

Mr. Hernandez found Shen Yun’s music, especially the erhu solo, to be very relaxing.

With 5,000 years of history and literature to draw from, Shen Yun is able to put on an all new production every year.

“If you have the opportunity to come here and see the show, it’s going to be a great experience,” Mr. Hernandez said.
