TAOYUAN, Taiwan—Shen Yun has long been a yearly must-see performance that is irreplaceable in the minds of many people in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. However, due to the fact that people are unable to see Shen Yun in China and Hong Kong, many fly to Taiwan or even the tens of thousands of miles to Europe or America, exclusively to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Among those making the trip was Mr. Lam Wing-yin, Sai Kung District Council member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. He flew to Taiwan to attend New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company in Taoyuan on the evening of March 22.

Seeing Shen Yun perform in Taiwan for three consecutive years, the Hong Kong Councilor said, “It is perfect in every aspect, including music, costumes, dancers’ skills, artistic attainments as well as the background (dynamic backdrops). It demonstrates the spirit of authentic Chinese culture.”

Lam Wing-yin expressed that Shen Yun has become the icon of Chinese culture and is the pride of Chinese people. He explained, “The show demonstrates the essence of our 5,000 years of Chinese culture. After seeing the show, even Westerners are amazed by Chinese culture. It’s remarkable that it preserves and revives the content of Chinese culture.”

“Nowadays, Hong Kong has attached more importance to economic development. Young people or children have less opportunity to get involved with cultural and artistic performances, in particular, such a traditional and authentic show. Take China and Hong Kong for instance. Whether it is in a major city in China or a metropolitan city like Hong Kong, there are few shows such as this being performed. Therefore, young people have no access to it.”

“If Shen Yun could perform in Hong Kong, I would not have to fly such a long way to come over here. I arrived (in Taiwan) yesterday afternoon, and will fly back tomorrow, after seeing the show tonight,” he continued.

“My flying thousands of miles here are because: First, every element of the show, including the costumes, music, solo vocal performance, etc.,  is perfect. Second, the spirit behind the show demonstrates the essence of our Chinese culture, that is, everyone must behave well, do good things or help others.”

Lam Wing-yin stressed, “Shen Yun intends to touch people to be good as much as possible. Our Chinese people should have the heart to help others to be compassionate. Everyone is part of this world, and those who have ability should do their best to help others.”

Lam Wing-yin expressed that what impressed him the most was the first program, which made him further reflect on the meaning of the existence of good and evil in life. He noted, “It let me contemplate why some beings are bad and evil after the universe was created.”

“I think the purpose is to highlight (the importance of) comparison. If we didn’t have this kind of comparison, it would be hard to distinguish good from bad, and kind from wicked. The existence of evil ones is to highlight the (importance of) compassion in human hearts.”

“So, Shen Yun is a perfect Chinese artistic performance. Not only does the show demonstrate the disparity of the kind and wicked, but it also illustrates the spirit of authentic Chinese culture, including teaching people to be good, to have the heart of justice, to be a decent person and to be a person of righteousness and dignity.”

Finally, Lam Wing-yin pointed to the audience packed in the performance hall and said that Shen Yun show was full of serenity, peacefulness, and compassion; because all of the people who attended Shen Yun show harbored the mentalities of appreciating the perfect connotations in the show, and accepting the virtues of justice and compassion; therefore, even the audience’s mood became more compassionate.
