LOS ANGELES—Performing through a vivid array of handmade costumes and colorful backdrops, the Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company visited the packed Dorothy Chandler Pavillion at the Music Center in Los Angeles Friday, Feb. 12.

Character actress Eve Brenner, who has played dozens of roles in television shows from the 1960s until today said the show’s choreography was “fascinating” and “the costuming is so extraordinary.”

“It was exciting and very satisfying. Thrilling in many ways,” she said.

The New York-based Shen Yun’s performance was hallmarked by smooth Chinese classical dance and tales of ancient China all colored with a live orchestra that blends Eastern and Western instruments.

One of Shen Yun’s dances is called Flowing Silk in which dancers move about the stage clad in costumes with silky sleeves that glide through the air. The Chinese call the sleeves “water sleeves” and they conjure up images of rippling water.

“They are so marvelously trained. It’s just very impressive to see it,” Ms. Brenner said.

“It’s just so exciting to see what you can do with that sort of thing—to create such a wonderful impression for the audience.”
