HSINCHU, Taiwan—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts staged its final show in Taiwan on the evening of March 22. Unwilling to wait for another year to see the show, he made the trip from Taipei to Hsinchu, to attend the show, with his wife and two children.

Dr. Liu Nairen, director of the Department of Digestive Endoscopy at the Chang-gung Memorial Hospital and is listed by Business Weekly as one of Taiwan’s top 100 doctors.

He considered Shen Yun’s performance “very creative” after watching the first half of the show.

He particularly liked soprano Hsu Chianing and tenor Yuan Qu who were part of the first half of the program. Frequently exposed to Western vocal music, Dr. Liu judged the two solos from the perspective of musical skills and sincerely praised the two singers. “The two singers are equipped with very good singing skills! They sang extremely well!”

Dr. Liu was also impressed with the piece Dance of the Snow-Capped Mountain. He had attended some Tibetan performances in the past and he thought that the program presented the features of Tibetan dancing in a genuine way. “The dance integrates Tibetan dancing into the program. It’s really good,” he said.

Tonight Dr. Liu experienced a performance of genuine Chinese culture, remarkably different from others. He mentioned that his children have learned dancing, and he noticed that Shen Yun performers presented a distinctiveness in their dancing skills. “These dancing skills were rarely seen before. That is, their jumps, turns, and diverse spins are amazing!”

Though Dr. Liu had often attended literary and artistic performances, the Shen Yun performance brought him classical Chinese dance. “This is the first time I have watched such a Chinese-style performance. I find it ... very creative.”

Commenting on the design of the backdrops, he said that it was the first time he had seen this used, and considered them very outstanding and creative. He believed the design would set new trends. He said laughingly, “I believe many people will copy the design of the backdrops in the future.”

The integration of Chinese historical stories with cultural diversity also impressed him. He found it unusual that the program The Monkey King Triumphs depicts through dancing the characters in “Journey to the West,” a Chinese classic novel. “This is my first time watching a dance program about the story of Tang Monk.” The interesting and vivid program fascinated not only Dr. Liu, but also his two children.

Since the show of Shen Yun has gained tremendous popularity among Taiwan audiences from all walks of life, Shen Yun will stage an extra two shows in the Changhua County Yunlin Performance Hall on March 24 and 25. The two extra shows were added to the tour so as not to disappoint those who missed the show earlier.
