NEW ORLEANS—The beautifully refurbished Saengar Theatre was just the place to be for Latin American, honorary consul Mr. Carreras.

“This is a wonderful performance. We are enjoying it very much …  not only the performance and the quality of it, but also the message that is being conveyed about traditional Chinese music and culture,” he said.

“Sophisticated dance techniques, an orchestra joining instruments from both the East and West, beautiful costumes, and a stunning back drop—this is Shen Yun at first glance,” according to the Shen Yun website. “But digging deeper, one discovers a sea of traditional Chinese culture. Mortals and divine beings merge on stage as one. Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience.”

Mr. Carreras said Shen Yun would be well received in his country,

It is known for its culture, especially literature and music. It has produced great poets and writers.

“I think obviously it’s a good message and wonderful performance that would be appreciated by the country.”

The artists are on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture, according to the program. “Under the last 60 years of atheist communist rule, this divinely inspired culture has been almost completely destroyed.” His country was also once run by a regime, but they have had multiple free elections, and a democratic government has ruled there for many years, he said.

“Overall, it’s a subtle message that’s very well presented,” Mr. Carreras said.

Built in 1927, Saenger Theatre, known as ‘The Crown Jewel of Canal Street,’ reopened last September after being closed for eight years.
