ST. LOUIS—This evening Shen Yun Performing Arts prevailed with its premiere at the Bezemes Family Theater of Lindenwood University’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts, which is located near St. Louis. The Bezemes Family Theater first opened its doors on Sept. 11, 2008 and featured a performance by Liza Minelli.

The Broadway-class theater is 138,000 square feet in size and seats 1,200. The building was named after Jerry Scheidegger, a St. Louis businessman and Lindenwood Unversity board member who gave the theater a considerable donation.

Attending the first performance was Nathan Jackson, who has a passion to get out and broaden his horizons. He describes himself as “a producer, an entertainer of sorts,” and he came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts with an “open mind so I could learn, and from an artist point of view, this is beautiful, it’s just beautiful.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts has been touring the world each season since 2006. To-date, it has brought traditional Chinese culture and exquisite beauty through music and classical Chinese dance to hundreds of thousands in nearly every major city on five continents.

Mr. Jackson enjoyed the music, saying that he thought everything is driven by music. He commented on the beautiful sounds and had a wish to see more of the orchestra, saying, “The live orchestra, this is exceptional, as a piano player myself, I wish I could see the orchestra.”

Chinese instruments such as the erhu (a two stringed Chinese instrument), the pipa (a Chinese lute) and the Chinese flute are just some of the instruments that complement the traditional Western instruments in Shen Yun’s orchestra making it very unique.

The enormous 3-D backdrops are tremendously colorful, animated, and interactive. They help to create the setting for the dancers and set the mood for each segment.

The elaborate costumes tell just as much of the story as the dances and backdrops. Mr. Jackson said: “This is precision if you will, the dance is impeccable, but the way they put it together, the outfits. ... I was just taken back by the embroidery piece [Elegant Embroidery]. It’s phenomenal, it is a sight to see.”

According to the program, ancient Chinese women prided themselves on their embroidery, known for its delicate needlework and exquisite designs. Dancers here stitch on silk with light and nimble fingers, bringing blossoms to bloom as they evoke images of a charming past.

Mr. Jackson felt he was taking a lot away with him from the show and said, “I want to say that I am genuinely being entertained and I am having a good time.”

Shen Yun will perform in the Bezemes Family Theater of Lindenwood University’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts through Saturday, Feb.13.
