SEATTLE—Mr. Harris, a drummer, was among the delighted audience members captivated by the highly acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts Spring Tour 2009 on Friday evening, May 22, at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre.

New York-based Shen Yun portrays traditional Chinese culture through music and Chinese classical dance, depicting myths, legends, and stories from ancient to modern-day China.

Mr. Harris found the show “very, very enjoyable, very captivating. It’s hard to take your eyes of the performers, and the costumes are absolutely amazing.”

As a passionate musician and a drummer of longstanding, he plays drum set in a rock band. Mr. Harris particularly enjoyed the drum segments in the show. He also enjoyed the many other dances such as Welcoming Spring. This fan dance presents a stunning burst of color, quick footwork, and crisp movements. He thought Mongolian Chopsticks was “really great.” Overall, he found the dancing “really exciting.”

Mr. Harris found it all “really great to watch,” and said, “Just the dynamics of the music, the emotion that the music stirs up inside of you—it’s very passionate. It’s easy to draw you into the dance, and the music is really expressive of that. It’s great!

“All the different instruments and the classic Chinese instruments, it’s just wonderful. We don’t get enough of that, it’s a very cultural experience.”

The orchestra brings together two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western, in a masterful fusion. With Western instruments as its foundation, the orchestra brings out Chinese musical flair through a variety of Chinese instruments. All of the music the orchestra plays is original and composed for each dance.

“It was fun, it was really fun to watch,” he said.
