VANCOUVER, British Columbia—“I thought it was beautiful. We liked the history. We loved the colour, and the dance was absolutely beautiful.”

This is how Mrs. Medina described the Shen Yun Performing Arts production she attended on Tuesday with her husband at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver.

“I agree. The costumes were very nice, the dancing was very nice, and it was very insightful of Chinese history. The music too was very nice,” said Mr. Medina, a pilot.

The couple drove from Washington State to see the show to celebrate their anniversary.

Mrs. Medina was delighted with the live orchestra and the erhu program. The erhu is a two-stringed Chinese instrument known for its mournful, mellow sound and wide range of notes.

“It was nice to have the live music, and the traditional instrument was really amazing. I thought it was true to [Chinese] culture, and it was really nice to see the actual instrument from China. I have never had an opportunity to see or hear them play before, so that was fabulous for me. It’s actually something I’ve always wanted to see.”

The couple especially enjoyed Welcoming Spring, a fan dance that includes quick footwork, crisp movement, and stunning bursts of colour.

“I just loved how they used the fans and the hand positions, the arms, everything. I loved it, I really did,” said Mrs. Medina.

After its Vancouver run ends on Wednesday, Shen Yun will go on to Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina.
