PHOENIX—Dr. Mott, a physician, was in the audience at the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2009 World Tour performance at the ASU Gammage on March 28. He said that he likes musical programs, adding that it was “interesting and enjoyable” to see a program with a different culture.

Dr. Mott found it difficult to say what he liked most about the performance, commenting that “the singers were fantastic, the dancers were wonderful, and the orchestra was great.

“I liked the spiritual message that there is something on the other side, and that it is important for people to seek the truth and that gives them hope ... and helps them to treat other people well and hopefully be treated well [themselves],” he said.

‘Educational, enlightening, and very entertaining’

School teacher, Ms. Vanleer didn’t know what to expect from Shen Yun, but she described the performance as “fantastic.

“I didn’t know much about Chinese culture, so it’s very educational, enlightening, and very entertaining.

“The costumes were really, really beautiful. The music was amazing. I loved every aspect of it.”

Ms. Vanleer particularly enjoyed listening to the female musician playing the erhu, a traditional two-stringed Chinese instrument.

“The music was really exotic and unusual, nothing that I have heard before,” she said.

For Ms. Vanleer, there was a lovely message of “hope and happiness.”

Ms. Vanleer’s husband, Mr. Loss, a Montessori School business manager, also felt that there was a message of hope. The performers were “talented” and he found the show enjoyable and “uplifting.”
