LOS ANGELES—The air was crisp and clear after a night of heavy rain, and much of the dust that normally lingers in the atmosphere above Los Angeles had settled to the ground. Amidst this setting, Shen Yun Performing Arts completed its second of a 10-show run on Saturday afternoon at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Music Center.

Among the audience for this matinee show were Mr. and Mrs. Zeilstra, who are philanthropic entrepreneurs.

Mrs. Zeilstra was thrilled with Shen Yun. She said, “It was wonderful; it was especially for us beautiful to be a part of the Chinese culture [and] to see the elegance of the dances and the dancers. It was exceptional. And the music, one word: Beautiful.”

Mrs. Zeilstra touched upon several of the distinct features of Shen Yun.

In addition to displaying classical Chinese dance, the show offers a glimpse into the rich history of China’s 5,000-year civilization. Accompanying the dancers is a live orchestra that combines classical Western and traditional Chinese instruments.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is billed as the world’s premier Chinese dance and music company.

Mrs. Zeilstra particularly enjoyed the dances. “Especially what I liked was the Mongolian dance (Mongolian Hospitality), for instance.“ She couldn’t help but add, ”and the lady with the [erhu]. That was beautiful.”

The erhu is an instrument from Chinese antiquity. The two-stringed instrument, in the hands of the right musician, can invoke deep emotions for those who hear it.

According to its website, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture, which is believed to be divinely inspired. Many of the dances display heavenly realms and convey messages related to honoring the divine.

Mrs. Zeistra felt the spirituality. She said that it is good to see that “in every country, in every place of the world, that we all have our gods, that we all want to acknowledge the divine and we saw that today. That’s really good. I’m happy about that.”

Mr. Zeilstra was equally delighted by the show. He said, “I like the show very much. The tradition, excitement, the beauty, the harmony, the discipline, the colors—everything is there. We’ve traveled all around the world and in China, and I would say this is one of the best shows that we ever saw.”

He added, “I am happy that we were able to come over here and that we could see the show. We are from Holland and we hope that you might visit Holland too, to give them a performance.” (Shen Yun will perform in Holland March 5-7).

Mr. and Mrs. Zeilstra create projects around the world to help people who are disadvantaged. “We like to set up little companies to help people to move forward to expand their businesses. No charge,” explained Mr. Zeilstra.

Mr. Zeistra wishes the show continued success, adding, “It is good to see something different—something different than performances in Las Vegas—a new kind of thing. This is totally different. It is very good that this is here!”

Shen Yun has three dance companies and three orchestras. While one company performs 10 shows in Los Angeles, the other Shen Yun companies will be performing in Worcester, Mass., Springfield, Ill., Dallas, Texas, St. Louis, Mo., and New York, N.Y.
