EDINBURGH, Scotland—Shen Yun Performing Arts brought its unique exposition of Chinese classical dance, music and culture to Scotland for the first time on Wednesday, delighting the audience at the Edinburgh Playhouse. A nobleman with an interest in China lauded the show.

“I find it incredibly skillful. I think that the artists are absolutely tremendous,” said Lord Glasgow during the intermission. He said that he was suprised to find what he described as a hybrid of western and Chinese elements. Lord Glasgow is part of the all party Chinese group in the House of Lords. It is a cross-political party group of Lords who discuss issues relating to China. The hereditary nobility in Britain retain genuine political power. The House of Lords vote on legislation.

“They are wonderful singers, terrific,” he said of the soloists, who earned rousing applause from the audience when they stepped forward to take their bows.

Lord Glasgow was surprised by the vocalist’s western technique: “They could be in a Verdi Opera!”

He was keen to express that he didn’t regard the inclusion of the western elements as a criticism. “The dancing and the the choreography is absolutely incredible—it’s completely breathtaking!” he said.

The Shen Yun orchestra is unique in its marriage of both classical Chinese and western instruments.

Shen Yun were performing for just one night in the 3000-capacity theatre in Scottish capital, before heading off to the Czech Republic, the next stop on the European leg of its global tour.
