VANCOUVER, British Columbia—A Vancouver man celebrated his 50th birthday by attending the Shen Yun Performing arts show at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Monday night.

“Instead of seeing a movie we wanted to take in some culture,” said Mr. Esaw, a branch manager of mutual funds, who attended the show with his wife.

Mr. Esaw said his favourite performance was Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution, a dance that shows the father of a young girl being persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party for his belief in the traditional spiritual practice of Falun Dafa.

“I was really moved by the one that had a spiritual theme. You can also see Christian parallels. That was impressive. I am sure some of this would be frowned upon in mainland China. I sort of expected a long story between good and evil, but they were short vignettes, colourful and beautiful.

“It’s very pretty—they are all very talented and gymnastically inclined. The guys were terrific,” he said.

Shen Yun uses an animated state-of-the art 3-D backdrop to add depth and variety to the show.

“The background slides really helped bring things to life—the colors, the flowers, the beauty, and the humanity,” said Mr. Esaw.

“It brings to mind some people who I think would enjoy seeing it. I want to call them and tell them to consider coming to see it.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts, formerly Divine Performing Arts, will present four more shows in Vancouver before going on to Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina.
