NEW YORK—Having studied music since age 4, Dace Dubrova described the music of Shen Yun Performing Arts as “heavenly.”

“The orchestra is excellent,” said Ms. Dubrova, who was educated in classical piano and vocals in her native Latvia, and now runs an upstart music school in New York City.

“Its such an inspiration to go out to a show and see people doing what they believe in,” said Ms. Dubrova, after watching the performance in New York on Jan. 10.

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 with the mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture, which has been largely lost under communist rule in China. Since its inception, the performance has become a global phenomenon with millions of people having seen Shen Yun.

“I was so impressed, the dresses, the outfits, the dancers—it’s unbelievable!” Ms. Dubrova said.

“It looks like the ladies are walking right on the clouds,” she said.

The hallmark of a Shen Yun performance is classical Chinese dance, but the performance also includes vocal soloists, and a unique orchestra that is rooted in both the Eastern and Western musical tradition.

Using a Western philharmonic orchestra as the foundation, combined with traditional Chinese instruments that lead the melodies, the orchestra seamlessly blends the two systems.

According to Ms. Dubrova the music in the Shen Yun performance is at a “triple world class level.”

Part of Shen Yun’s performances are solo performances by the singers of Shen Yun. The singers are unparalleled in the world in their ability to use bel canto technique to sing Chinese text.

“I was impressed by the choice of the songs. Amazing singers, amazing voices, amazing ranges, great technique,” Ms. Dubrova said.
