LOS ANGELES—Entertainment lawyer Mark Kalmansohn thought Shen Yun’s performance at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler on Feb. 13 was terrific.
“I enjoy seeing the different cultures of China. I know China’s a very large country with a lot of diverse cultures,” Mr. Kalmansohn said.
He liked the piece Tibetan Dance of Praise commenting, “I know the Tibetan culture, for example, is under a lot of pressure from the Chinese government. And it’s being diluted by China.”
Mr. Kalmansohn also enjoyed the piece ‘Nothing Can Block the Divine Path’ where a Falun Gong practitioner is persecuted and goes to heaven: “I like the overall theme embracing Falun Gong because I know it’s supposed to be quite beautiful and serene and spiritual way of life and practice, ... And that it’s been quite repressed on mainland China,” Mr. Kalmansohn said.
He also said that those performances might be analogies for how the Cultural Revolution affected so many families.
“Everything is just beautiful and it’s diverse and flowing and very professional,” Mr. Kalmansohn said.
“I’ve been to others. I was at a Chinese concert at the John Anson Ford Theater this past summer. And it was not even 10 percent as good as this. This is really just terrific quality.”
In sum, Mr. Kalmansohn thought the show was “diverse, beautiful, very entertaining, very flowing.”
