DETROIT—“It was a surprise ... this is very nice. I’ve been wanting to see this for two or three years and so we are happy to finally be coming here to see this. It’s very nice!” said Lynn Rose, who came to see Shen Yun at the Detroit Opera House on Feb. 7.

Ms. Rose is Public Affairs Officer for the Army Corp of Engineers, and she came with her husband, Steve Rose, Assistant Chief of Operations for the Army Corp of Engineers, who surprised his wife with tickets to Shen Yun for her birthday.

“You see how pretty and beautiful and happy, it’s very colorful and very elegant dance. The dance is very elegant and it was very nice to see that. But this shows that there is a lot of culture out there in China that we don’t get to see,” she said.

Ms. Rose said the music was very enjoyable, “Especially the baritone, it was very nice to hear that deep [voice]...usually you hear a very high pitch ... kind of sound, but to hear him to really clearly singing—his voice was very good and wonderful, very warm, I liked that.”

She further enjoyed the meaning of what was sung: “And his lyrics were mostly wondering ‘Where am I?’ ‘Who am I?’ and then kind of ‘It’s ok, I found myself through this Fa.' It describes his journey of finding himself and that was nice to hear that.”

The Fa that she mentions from the lyrics refers to the law or principles of the universe as taught through the practice of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, an ancient practice of mind, body, and spirit that’s based on the guiding principles of Truthfulness, Benevolence, and Forbearance.

Falun Dafa has been brutally persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since July 1999.

“I never had an opportunity to see this culture ..., so it was interesting,” Mr. Rose added.
