HOLLYWOOD—“I have seen several shows; this one is the best,” said Mr. Mahfouz Doss after watching Shen Yun Performing Arts World Company at the famous Dolby Theater Jan. 22.

Mr. Doss was a past president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which produces the Golden Globe Awards every year for an estimated 250 million viewers worldwide. He has had a long, illustrious career as a foreign correspondent and an international film critic. His career has spanned over 60 years, and his accomplishments are too numerous to list.

“I am delighted,” said Mr. Doss. “The dancing, the costumes, the clothing, the scenery.” He said the entire performance was well put together.

Each year Shen Yun Performing Arts, a non-profit based in upstate New York, travels the globe with a new and exciting production.

“For 5,000 years divine culture flourished in the land of China. Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through breathtaking music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing back this glorious culture,” says Shen Yun’s website.

With an enormous track record critiquing film production, Mr. Doss admitted, “I am very difficult to please, but I was pleased!”

He was particularly happy to watch the spiritual aspect of ancient Chinese culture.

Shen Yun’s website explains, “Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience. Originating from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, these ideals are the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”

“Yes, this is what I like,” he said, adding that the spirituality is both educational and informative.

“I look at it as a study in history,” he said. “You have to learn from the past, so we'll not make the same mistakes.”

One of the virtues Mr. Doss saw in Shen Yun’s performance was tolerance, and he thought that could benefit the modern world.

In closing, he added, “As I said, I was delighted!”
