FRANKFURT, Germany—The annual highlight of Holder Fischer’s life arrived at Frankfurt’s Jahrhunderthalle on Feb. 26, and this year, the accountant brought five friends to make the experience even more enjoyable.

For three years running, Mr. Fischer, an accountant, had seen the highly-acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company perform its exhilarating performance of classical Chinese dance and music.

“Shen Yun is a yearly highlight for me,” he said. “The dance style is extraordinary. I take my hat off to the dancers.”

At the core of the New York-based Shen Yun performances is classical Chinese dance with China’s numerous ethnic and folk dance styles rounding out the evening.

In a collection of short stories, audiences travel from the Himalayas to tropical lake-filled regions; from the legends of the culture’s creation over 5,000 years ago through to the persecution of the spiritual form, Falun Dafa in China today; from the highest heavens down to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom.

Mr. Fischer especially liked the positive endings to each story-based dance and felt deeply the spiritual overtones, partcularly in the dances that highlighted oppression that shows strength of conviction and outstanding courage will overcome adversity.

The accountant had never been an arty person, he said, but his interest in Shen Yun has grown from year to year whetting his appetite to learn more about Chinese art.

Classical Chinese dance has three main components: form, bearing and techniques. Form refers to the intricately poses and movements that make up the vocabulary of the art form, its website says.

Bearing is the emphasis of the dancer’s inner expression that brings something magical too the art, while techniques include difficult moves—jumps, flips, twists, and spins, that have been a part of classical Chinese dance for thousands of years.
