MISSISSAUGA, Canada—After dentist Monika Jain experienced Shen Yun Performing Arts on Sunday afternoon, she felt like she had been taken to a celestial paradise.

“It’s amazing. It feels like I just visited Heaven and came back to Earth now,” she said. “I want to go again!”

Dr. Jain, who owns two dental clinics in Hamilton, Ontario, attended the Jan. 19 matinee performance for the first time with her whole family—mother, father, husband, two sons, and a daughter.

She was full of enthusiasm after the performance, saying she wanted everyone to experience Shen Yun.

“I will tell everybody to come and watch it,” said Dr. Jain. “I will take [the Shen Yun] flyers and tell everybody it’s amazing.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Formed by overseas Chinese artists in 2006, its mission is to revive the essence of China’s 5,000-year-old divinely inspired culture.

Dr. Jain said the dancer’s talent and positive energy combined to create an ethereal effect—almost as if they were heavenly beings on stage.

“It feels like all the [dancers] are made of god’s flowers which are blooming in the air, just like cotton,” she said.

“It looked like flowers from the sky coming down—there is no [gravitational] force. It’s really nice, it was amazing.”

She was also impressed with the operatic singers and live orchestra featured in Shen Yun. The acclaimed orchestra is unique in that it blends classical Western and traditional Chinese instruments.

“Everyone is excellent—the singers, the orchestra—and I cannot believe everything is a live performance,” she said.

“The whole show is excellent.”

She appreciated the translation of the soloists’ lyrics, which were projected on Shen Yun’s digital backdrops. The performance includes a soprano, tenor, and baritone that sing bel canto operatic style with Chinese lyrics.

“The background of the music, the Chinese [lyrics], it’s so spiritual,” she said, adding that the songs spread a message of peace. “If the world can follow this, nobody will fight.”

“It is like the gods came on this show and are telling us be together [because] we are all humans—it just really feels like God is inside me, telling me.”

According to the Shen Yun program book the lyrics are filled with traditional Chinese philosophy on the origin and meaning of life. With titles such as This is the Song You’ve Been Waiting For and Awakening, all songs are original compositions by Shen Yun’s artists.
