SAN JOSE, Calif.—On Friday, April 8, a standing ovation concluded the Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company’s first 2011 performance in the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts.

Located in downtown San Jose, California’s third largest city, the Center for Performing Arts stood ready to welcome guests from the Bay Area and beyond to Shen Yun’s performances. Numerous audience members arrived at the evening’s performance with hopeful expectations. The New York Company’s dancers met and surpassed those expectations once again.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture through performance arts. Its shows feature Classical Chinese Dance with a unique live orchestra that combines classical Chinese instruments such as the pipa, suona, and erhu with a full orchestra. The shows also feature a digital, animated backdrop that is interactive with the performers on stage.

Cynthia, a musician who lives in the area, appreciated the traditional elements Shen Yun brought to its performance. “From what I can tell it seems like it’s very traditional here, so that’s nice,” she said. She recognized the technical precision of the dancers, “Everybody is perfectly in sync,” Cynthia said. “The precision is really cool.”

As a musician herself, Cynthia also appreciated the close partnership between the orchestra and the dancers. “The music and the dance goes hand in hand,” she said.
