OTTAWA—Shen Yun Performing Arts brought the spirit of ancient China to life on stage at the National Arts Centre on Boxing Day.
“It’s fabulous,” said Kin Choi, an assistant deputy minister at Health Canada. “Lots of spectacular views and pageantry. Quite a show.”
In pre-Communist China, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism were major influences in Chinese arts and a means of connecting with the higher universe. Shen Yun takes its inspiration from this root of traditional Chinese society. Artists cultivated virtue and engaged in study and meditation, says Shen Yun’s website.
“Because they believed that to create true art worthy of the heavens, there must first be inner beauty and purity. Today, Shen Yun’s artists follow in this noble tradition,” the website reads.
“There’s so much to take in. I’m glad they have the interpreters—kind of gives you the context,” Mr. Choi said of Shen Yun’s two hosts who introduce each dance.
“The orchestra was flawless. The sounds of it really helped tell the story, so they’ve done a fabulous job. I really enjoyed it.”
Mr. Choi said he also enjoyed Shen Yun’s animated backdrop. “I thought it was great. ... It adds a lot of fun to the show.”
“I think the drama of it, the music, are all really well choreographed.”
Now finished its Ottawa run, Shen Yun will go on to Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Montreal.
