SYDNEY, Australia—While financial consultant Bernadette was excited about what she saw at Saturday night’s performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts, she said it also had a very relaxing feel to it.
“It was really good, very cultural and meaningful, very colourful and had a very relaxing vibe about it,” said Bernadette after seeing Shen Yen at NIDA’s Parade Theatre in Sydney on April 25.
The way that the dancers (especially a company from New York) were able to revive Chinese culture and share it with the rest of the world she said was very exciting.
She commented on the piece Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution, which gives a glimpse into the reality of contemporary China, and shows the persecution of a Falun Gong practitioner in China and the effects that this has on his family and the community.
“It was emotional,” she said adding that such a tragic tale was successfully told through the art of dance.
The piece ultimately is about hope, with grand scenes as the father ascends to the heavens.
Also in the audience was an occupational therapist who said that Shen Yen also gave her a better understanding of Chinese culture and history.
“[It also gave me] a realisation that no matter where we are in the world we are all the same. We all like our dance, we all like our music and we all like our song and that we can express ourselves through our emotions,” she said.
Shen Yun Performing Arts performs two more shows at Kensington’s Parade Theatre on Sunday, April 26.
