HOUSTON—Douglas Poulter was touched by the performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at Jones Hall, Dec. 29.

“I was impressed, it’s really remarkable, I was left breathless in many cases,” he said.

Mr. Poulter, who is retired from a career in audio-visual communication, could really appreciate the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art graphics technology that produced a lively, animated backdrop.

“The scenery was so exquisitely timed,” he said.

Mr. Poulter was particularly taken with the piece, Capturing Arrows with Boats of Straw, and said he thought the backdrop really brought the audience into the story.

“I loved way the effects moved independently. The boat was going  one direction and the ships in the background were going another. I thought the whole thing was really enchanting,” he said.

Shen Yun is a classical Chinese dance company based in New York. Their mission is the revive China’s traditional culture through the performing arts.

Many Shen Yun dances are based on ancient myths and classic literature. These stories depict traditional values—like loyalty, filial piety, selflessness, and tolerance.

Mr. Poulter also appreciated the values depicted in the performance.

He summed up his overall impression of the performance saying, “I find it difficult to put into words—the whole creation is masterful, it’s just brilliant.
