NEW YORK—Shen Yun Performing Arts filled New York Ctiy’s Radio City Music Hall with bright colors, upfliting music, and smiling theatergoers on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Ms. Robins, a former ballet dancer, was at Radio City, and the ancient Chinese classical dance forms the show exhibited were quite pleasing for her.

“My own feeling is one of joy,” she said. “I get tremendous joy out of watching people doing something very well especially in a culture that I am not that familiar with, to see how joyful they all are.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the five-millennia-old culture of ancient China. It invokes many of the sacred elements found in the divinely inspired culture through classical Chinese dance, story, and song.

“I think the dancers are fantastic,” Ms. Robins said. “I was a dancer myself many, many years ago, a ballet dancer. So I appreciate what they are doing there. The bodies are beautiful. The women moved beautifully. They are very exquisite.”

The dances in the show carry deep inner meanings. A piece called “The Dance of the Dai” shows how water has a spiritual meaning for the Dai people. Playing by a riverbank, young girls splash each other for good luck, appreciative of the life-giving river. The Dai ethnic dance, distinguished by its fluid arm movements and flexible fingers, epitomizes the serene beauty of these peaceful people.

“As a dancer, I know how hard it is,” Ms. Robins said. “And also just the ensemble work that everyone is so together. The movement of the head—all the heads are perfect. The bodies are perfect. The shoulders are all aligned perfectly. It is beautiful to watch that, so it is very impressive.

“I just wanted to express how much I appreciated this and that I am looking forward to learning more about various Chinese cultures and the philosophy,” she added.

Shen Yun has performed in over 100 cities in five continents to more than a million audience members, billing themselves as the premier classical Chinese dance company.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company opened its first show to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday.

Shen Yun will perform at Radio City Music Hall in New York the weekends of Feb. 13-14 and Feb. 20-21.
