AMSTERDAM, Netherlands—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts 2009 World Tour in Amsterdam will linger on in the hearts and minds of many who saw its depiction of ancient and modern Chinese history on Saturday, April 18 at the popular RAI Theater.

Appreciative audience members gave prolonged applause and curtain calls after watching the show. Portuguese-born Mr. Cobina, and his retired former boss, Mr. Bos, a stained-glass artist, now aged 87, were in the audience.

The world-class performance has at its foundation China’s 5,000-year-old traditions, depicted in classical Chinese dance and music, a blend of exquisitely costumed dancers performing story-based dance.

Digitally enhanced backdrops match dances and songs with groundbreaking orchestral music of Western and Chinese original compositions.

Mr. Cobina, who owns a firm that designs and manufactures artistically stained-glass products, came away inspired.

He said emphatically, “I am enamored with the arts. I even incorporate art into my profession. The show is living art. It is the art that represents dance, the art the represents movement. All that is truly wonderful art.”

As a glass artist, Mr. Cobina works with colors and he thought that the combination of design and color in the show was used beautifully.

The reason he came to show was to see the return of Chinese tradition and culture, which was “Beautiful and interesting. I especially was quite taken with the colors, and the costumes.

“I have been given such a wonderful experience.”

Mr. Cobina enjoyed the elegant movements of the dancers.

“Just the greatest, just elegant. This is a wonderful day to remember. I had a wonderful day.”

He said that the show eased the stress in his body, and when he returns home vivid pictures of the choreography, songs, dances, and music will linger in his mind.

He had no idea what to expect from the show. Now he felt “all around relaxed.”

Inspired by the color combinations, Mr. Cobina said he would not have considered using the color combinations he had seen, but has since had a change of heart.

“The color combination of orange and blue and the shining bright colors were beautiful to behold. I would not have used them in the past, but today, I thought ‘Why not?’”

He believed the audience would also take home, Shen Yun’s expression of humanity’s true spiritual heritage.

“It is very spiritual ... the music underscores the dramatic effect of the show. The art, represented in the music from the orchestra and the dancers’ movements, elicited calmness, then suddenly it went in the opposite direction and climaxed.

“This was beautiful. Sometimes I had goose bumps. Emotion took hold of my body. This is a nice climax.”

The 3-D backdrop was “exhilarating. The projections were very colorful. This brings spirituality closer to us. One sits in the audience and sees the mountains in the distance. Very intriguing,” Mr. Cobina said.

Mr. Bos, Mr. Cobina’s former employer and friend, said: “I truly enjoyed the show. If, despite my advanced age, I get the opportunity, I will come and see the show next year.”

The 3-D backdrop also impressed him and he honored Shen Yun for giving him a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.

“The colors and the scenery depicting mountains had a very calming effect on me. Especially the song at the beginning of the show made a great impression on me—a fantastic voice.”
