VANCOUVER, Canada—For Neil Thompson, Chinese classical dance is a new art form that is different from anything he’s seen before, and he enjoyed what he saw.
The investment consultant was among the audience at the final show of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ five-show run at Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Sunday, March 28.
“The costumes are nicer than anything I’ve ever seen, very different, original. I’m quite impressed with the dance. The dancers are in beautiful condition. It’s new to me, a new art form, so I’m enjoying it,” he said.
He had special praise for the state-of-the-art digital backdrops that are custom-designed to coordinate with the costumes, choreography, lighting, and other elements of each dance. They are particularly striking for the story-based dances that are a trademark of the world-renowned classical Chinese dance and music company.
“I take it as part of the set and they are perfect and fitting,” Mr. Thompson said.
“I think the opening with the horse and chariot was very exciting,” he added, highlighting the dance titled “The Emperor Ushers in a Glorious Age” that tells the story of divinely inspired culture being established on earth.
The dance depicts a celestial kingdom where a magnificent emperor appears and invites all the heavenly beings by his side to join him in descending to earth to save all life.
“I see that the show is trying to bring peace and harmony to the world,” said Mr. Thompson, adding that in his view the show was successful in bringing these themes and ideals to the audience.
“I think it is one of the productions to see,” he said. “It’s a very nice presentation all through and I’m enjoying it.”

Shen Yun’s Vancouver run ended on Sunday. The show will continue on to play in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, and Toronto.
