BERLIN—German poet Jean Paul commented during the 18th century, “Berlin is more than merely a world-class city.” On Monday evening, the Shen Yun Performing Arts show was at Friedrichstadtpalast.

Dancers seemed to fly across the stage, among the Western violins one could perceive the music of the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument. Singers like tenor Hong Ming, whose translated name is “thunderous voice,” aired their powerful voices across the audience. The performance was well-attended, and right from the start the audience members honored the performers with generous applause.

Classical Chinese dance has as its foundation China’s divinely inspired culture of 5,000 years, and viewers were fascinated. Among them was the Ulrich couple, both government employees from Berlin. Mrs. Ulrich deemed the show as “very nice, very engaging” and added, “I appreciated the hosts’ commentaries before the scenes. It enabled me to better follow what was happening on stage. The dance was most impressive, also the costumes—they must surely be made of silk,” she said.

Her husband commented, “I found it nice, the dance moves are impressive. And the costumes are elaborate. The choreography is lovely. There are so many people on stage at once time, and yet the choreography works one hundred percent.” His wife added, “The lightness [of the dancers] ...” and he said, “Yes, such lightness, although to achieve this [it] must be really difficult.”

The Epoch Times had an opportunity during intermission to speak with distinguished attorney Mrs. Masuhr who told us she found the show exciting and colorful. “What surprised me, was that [although] this music is so foreign to our ears, it went right into my blood.”

The audience seemed to mirror her reaction. Several scenes earned rousing applause. Mrs. Masuhr was enchanted saying, “Ever since I was young I had been involved in Chinese matters. My father had a business in China 25 years ago, when Taiwan was still called Formosa. That led to my curiosity. Very nice, very multi-faceted. It is a great effort to show 5,000 years of Chinese culture in [such a short period of time].”
