ADELAIDE, Australia—Sophia Kalantzis is a young singer who is appreciative of the Shen Yun performance which is playing at the Adelaide Performing Arts Centre. Shen Yun is touring the world presenting the legends and stories of ancient Chinese history in beautiful music and dance.

“I don’t know much about China. But it’s good to learn, that’s why I’m here, to learn about their background, their culture,” she said.

The city of Adelaide is known for its appreciation of fine art and culture. Talking about Shen Yun Sophia said, “It was very educational, young performers are amazing what they can do at that age. As a singer the arts is also something that I am into, and I thought the drummers were ... good as well. In different cultures you have different things.”

Sophia thought the opening scene of the show was the best.

“My favorite would have been the drumming. The one at the beginning was just truly different. It was good to see it. It is amazing. It gets you involved.”

Music has been a passion for Sophia since she was 4 years old, but she found the singing today to be unusual. She said that watching Shen Yun would help her in her singing career. “It would help me a lot. It is just different,” she said.

She also enjoyed the clothes. “The clothes are stunning, a lot of detail—very elegant.”

Adelaide residents Mr and Mrs Farkus also raved about the show. “Absolutely fantastic show, we thoroughly enjoyed it,” said Mr Farkus.

“It was spectacular,” said Mrs Farkus. “I loved it. The costumes, the girls, everything was so beautiful, so very well put together!”

Mrs Farkus said that she had visited China and had seen a show there, “but it wasn’t as spectacular as Shen Yun, because it didn’t have the movements, nor did it tell the history of dance in China, which this did.

“I don’t know a lot about their dancing culture ... and I had no idea that a lot of the classical dance steps have been adapted to other things, and I was very impressed to know that.”

Mrs Farkus particularly enjoyed the singing as she often attends opera productions. She really appreciated that even though all the songs were sung in Mandarin, the subtitles appeared on the backdrop, so that everyone could understand the profound meaning of the words.

She said that the lyrics in the singing reflected her beliefs, and she found this very moving. “It’s actually my belief that we are eternal beings, and this is just a journey, one of many ... we really are here on a journey to experience life to its fullest. And we create our own destiny and our own universe, and it’s then one step of many journeys that we return. ... And that did come across. I particularly felt that from the opera singers, you see, I love opera. It was very good to have the interpretation in English.”

Both agreed it was “an absolutely thoroughly fantastic afternoon.”

Shen Yun travels to Brisbane April 9, and then to neighbouring New Zealand, where they will perform from April 15 to 17, and return to Sydney for seven days from April 19 to 26.
