PHILADELPHIA—Ms. Mike, a dancer, was among a mesmerized audience at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, which was the perfect venue for the Shen Yun Performing Arts Company performance.
This was the first time Ms. Mike has seen a show that presented traditional Chinese culture. “I was really looking forward to it and I enjoyed every minute of it,” she said.
Audiences worldwide have been dazzled by the colors of the artists’ costumes. “The colors [of the artists costumes] were magnificent,” Ms. Mike said.
The dancers movement across the stage, perfected by the Shen Yun performers, was another topic mentioned many times.
“Everything was flowing [the way the dances moved across the stage]. I want to go home and learn how to do that walk where they just flow around the floor. I love that.”
Dancing since she was 2-years-old, Ms. Mike was astounded and “appreciated what went into their movements and the strength that [the dancers] have, and yet it made it so beautiful and flowing. It’s like hiding that strength.”
“One can see the control by the dancers. I love the footwork. I’m not used to that kind of footwork. I just really enjoyed it. I want to go home and try it. I want to go home and practice what I have seen tonight,” she added.
For this dancer, the choreography was exceptional. “I’ve done a lot of choreography, so I really appreciated that. Getting everybody together and as one is not easy. So I really appreciated that too,” she said.
The live orchestra, that embraced both Eastern and Western instruments, enhanced the performance in the eyes of all audiences, including Ms. Mike.
“I loved the orchestra and all the different instruments,” which were introduced during the show.
Other features impressed Ms. Mike as well. The state-of-the art 3-D backdrops brought colorful scenes of China’s landscape to each of the dances.
“I liked the way they used the technology and backdrop. That really made it powerful. And yet, it didn’t overpower the dancing. I liked the format of the backdrop,” she said.
She also note the use of introductions of the songs into English so the audience could follow the meaning and message of the songs.
The show was a “Wonderful way to bring in the New Year. I love the Chinese dancing.”
It’s a very moving. The entire show has a deep spiritual side. You could just feel it inside as well as out. It’s just very nice,” she shared before leaving for home.
