Records which come with self-stated intellectual concepts are rightly viewed with some suspicion, but please suspend your cynicism a minute for Shearwater’s third album. A work (for that is what it is) intended to reflect the experience of living on an isolated island, this is a truly magical record. ‘Hidden Lakes’ conjures thoughts of beauty amongst an imposing windswept landscape and vocalist Jonathan Meiburg’s vocals, strange and fleeting in their delivery, give everything an ethereal air, not least on the gorgeous ‘Runners of the Sun’. Beautiful, dark and at times imposing, just like the island at the edge of the world it describes. Exceptional.
