Shakespeare in the Park Begins on June 5

For those who love Shakespeare as much as Central Park, there is nothing better than the summertime Shakespeare in the Park, now in its 50th year.

NEW YORK—It’s the season of free outdoor theaters. For those who love Shakespeare as much as Central Park, there is nothing better than the summertime Shakespeare in the Park, now in its 50th year.

Situated adjacent to the Turtle Pond, the Delacorte Theater will stage Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, As You Like It, directed by Danielle Sullivan, as well as Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical Into the Woods, directed by Timothy Sheader.

In As You Like It, Rosalind, one of Shakespeare’s most breathtaking heroines, and her lover Orlando find themselves in the captivating Forest of Arden and discover that nothing transforms, redeems, or enriches experience quite as powerful as love.

The Tony Award-winning classic fairytale Into the Woods depicts a baker and his wife, who have been condemned by a witch to a life without children. The duo embarks on a quest to find the four items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold.

As You Like It is playing from June 5 to 30. Into the Woods is gracing the theater from July 23 to Aug. 25. All performances begin at 8 p.m. with free admission.

The public can obtain up to a pair of tickets from either waiting in line at the theater or going through an online ticketing system. Ticket distribution begins at 1 p.m. on the day of the performance at the theater. Individuals going through the online ticketing system must submit a request for tickets between midnight and 1 p.m. on the day of the performance and will hear back between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. via e-mail.
