The Honorable Lou Ann Palmer, Mayor of the City of Sarasota, brought three generations of her family to the Divine Performing Arts show in the Van Wezel Theater on Dec. 22. Mayor Palmer and her son-in-law Mr. Elder, both familiar with Chinese culture, were very impressed by the show.

“I brought the whole family,” said Mayor Palmer. “I wanted to make sure they all had the chance to come and enjoy this. It’s an incredible cultural event for the City of Sarasota.”

The Mayor traveled to China last year to visit Sarasota’s sister city, the Siming District of Xiamen, but she had never seen anything like this show in China or in the United States.

“It’s something very unique because we normally don’t have shows that reflect this kind of cultural difference, from other places around the world, she said. ”We have concerts, and we have Broadway shows, but to have something uniquely oriental for this part of the world is a little unusual, but it’s so exciting and it’s thrilling. So, this was absolutely brilliant.”

Mr. Elder, the mayor’s son-in-law, described what he saw in the show: “It was an interesting cultural comment about truth and morality mixed with music and dance. It highlighted the current human conflicts [in China] and the relationship with, and the understanding, of truth.

Mayor Palmer said, “The show was brilliant—absolutely brilliant. I hope it comes back to Sarasota. We'd love to see it here again. Xie Xie“ [Chinese for ”Thank you"].
