Shen Yun Performing Arts will perform at the Civic Theater in downtown San Diego for four shows during the weekend of April 21 to 23.

After the successful shows in northern San Diego County in February, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company is visiting the San Diego area for a second time as part of the 2023 world tour.

The greater San Diego area officials sent proclamations, certificates, and letters expressing their appreciation for the group’s efforts to revive traditional Chinese culture around the world.

Rep. Juan Vargas said in a proclamation that the Shen Yun 2023 world tour, which started on Dec. 24, 2022, is the largest by far covering more than 180 cities in 20 countries and five continents; and that this is the 16th consecutive year San Diegans get to enjoy Shen Yun shows, which give “the message of hope that disperses darkness.”

Rep. Scott Peters noted in an earlier proclamation that Shen Yun produces new performances each year and performs in front of millions of audience members in the world’s most prestigious theaters.

California State Senator Kelly Seyarto sent a Certificate of Recognition thanking Shen Yun’s “service and dedication in sharing your art and culture with our community.” Senator Brian Jones attended the performance in February and presented a certificate in support of Shen Yun’s mission.

Six out of seven State Assembly members from San Diego sent their greetings.

Assemblywoman Akilah Weber said that “the rich and vibrant Chinese history that you bring to the stage is truly a great contribution to our San Diego region.”

Assemblywoman Marie Waldron praised “each Shen Yun performance showcases the incredibly expressive art form of classical Chinese dance in its purest form, along with a unique live orchestra combining eastern and western instruments.”

Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath sent a certificate recognizing Shen Yun’s performances at the San Diego Civic Theater, which are “combining history and artistry to delight audiences all over the country, including here in San Diego.”

San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson proclaimed April 21 as “Shen Yun Performing Arts Day in the second district to recognize their portrayal of the beauty of traditional Chinese culture through dance, music and story.” The proclamation further states that “Shen Yun is a great success story, in which hundreds of people worked together seamlessly towards a common goal, reviving the authentic Chinese culture that was suppressed by the Communist regime of Mao.”

Supervisor Jim Desmond sent a representative to the theater in February to present a proclamation as well.

The mayor of Chula Vista, the second largest city in San Diego County, John McCann sent a proclamation praising Shen Yun’s growth “from 1 to 8 equally sized companies in 17 years,” with the artists “living by the values of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, the tenants of Falun Dafa, and the source of inspiration of Shen Yun programs.” The mayor congratulates and commends Shen Yun for their second visit to the area.

La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis sent a proclamation commending Shen Yun on its tour of the world and encouraging La Mesa residents to attend a Shen Yun performance and immerse themselves in the traditional Chinese culture through dance and music.

San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones and city council members praised Shen Yun artists for bringing on stage stories from China’s history, filled with tales of courage and sacrifice, integrity and loyalty, compassion, and virtue.
