In line with the recent “free” internet downloads and MP3 excitement, Nine Inch Nail’s hard rock mastermind Trent Reznor released an online statement through his Twitter account Wednesday morning that read:

“I’ve been busy. Brand new FULL LENGTH NIN record available now.”

The tweet (twitter posting) contained a link to Reznor’s website which streamed a low production audio backbeat and flashing bold text, “Nine Inch Nail’s new record, “Strobe Light” produced by hip-hop notable Timbaland.”

In actuality, the site was an April fool’s joke, with obvious sarcasm. The mock album, featured fictitious song names such as Everybody’s Doing It (featuring Chris Martin, Jay-Z AND, Bono) and still hurts (featuring Alicia Keys). For those that follow the hard rock scene, the webpage was actually a timely poke at fellow early 1990s rock front-man Chris Cornell.

Cornell’s recent collaboration with hip hop producer Timbaland was entitled Scream. The album was a heavy departure from Cornell’s normal rock and roll outfit, and is filled to the brim with Timbaland’s signature hip-hop production.

Reznor’s sarcasm via online joke was the latest blow in an online spat between the two that started in March, where Reznor discredited Scream and Cornell responded with his own words for Reznor and a quote from the Bible.

Reznor’s spat with Cornell echos the online chatter of some of Cornell’s fans that are confused and disappointed with his new artistic direction. The once hard-edged rocker has reinvented his music on his latest album into a more street polished ubran sound, which has alienated some of his core fans.
