CHIAYI, Taiwan—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company staged its second Chiayi show on March 11 at National Chung Hsing University. Among the audience was Chen Yueshan (born in 1928), an internationally renowned calligrapher, and his wife.

“Shen Yun is the most valuable and highest-level Chinese cultural show I’ve seen in my entire life,” said Mr. Chen, who was dressed in Tang Dynasty clothing.

“Very beautiful, the gestures were nice; the dances were wonderful; also the songs. Shen Yun performed in a very high realm and [the audience] was absorbed in a very high realm. I think every program was very good. There were poems, calligraphy, etiquette, and music. Shen Yun is like a live work of art.”

Mr. Chen often gives his calligraphy pieces to Westerners as gifts. “However, our Chinese characters are not understandable to the Westerners. It kind of serves no use. However, this performance symbolizes Chinese culture, namely promoting Chinese culture. I think Shen Yun achieved this purpose today.”

Upon retirement, Mr. Chen held about a dozen exhibitions at Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, Taichung City Cultural Center, etc. Some of his work has been put into the collection by the Member of National Collections. He also published two albums of “General Yue Fei Calligraphy Exhibition,” one album of “Baltic Heart Sutra” and one of “Mountain Couplets of Mountains.”
