A new consumer report shows that protein shakes can become harmful for users’ health when consumed in excess. Metallic elements in the drinks can build up over time and potentially lead to unwanted side effects.

Consumer Reports magazine has conducted research specifically aimed at determining what protein drinks do to people outside of their intended function.

Additives used to make popular protein shakes such as Muscle Milk and Myoplex can cause unwanted deposits of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury, according to Consumer Reports.

Medical specialists at WebMD highlighted children, pregnant women, diabetic patients, and people with kidney disease would be the most at risk due to the unwanted additives.

Safer sources of protein can be found by spending less money than on protein drinks. Various meats, beans, and eggs can provide high levels of protein for people looking to build muscle.

Muscle Milk posted a statement online saying that the studies are inaccurate. They say there has not been any solid evidence confirming that the amount of metallic elements in the drinks is high enough to harm someone.
