OTTAWA—Chinese audience members say they are proud of their culture after seeing the Divine Performing Arts show at the National Arts Center, Southam Hall.

Ms. Li, who moved from China to Canada two years ago, took family and friends to the closing performance on Jan. 4.

“[It is] so beautiful—the dances, music, the colours, and costumes. Every single part of it is so good; they performed Chinese culture so beautifully. I have never seen such a good performance,” she said.

Ms. Li’s husband, who had seen the DPA performance before, brought his wife so she could see a “world-class show. ”

Both agreed they would never see a performance in China at a level as high as DPA.

DPA derives its artistic style from classical Chinese dance and incorporates into its works Chinese ethnic and folk dance.

“Nowadays all the performance group from China come with a taste of national propaganda, and [performances are] kind of stiff, without any traditional content. But DPA displayed authentic Chinese culture. I learned what the true 5,000-year-old Chinese culture is from the Divine Performing Arts shows,” said Mr. Li. He was also very glad to see many Westerners at the performance.

“The show attracted so many people of other ethnic groups. We also invited friends from Japan and China. [I hope] more friends can come to such a wonderful show,” he said.

The couple said that Chinese would be happy seeing a Chinese performing group grow progressively stronger, adding that they would be very proud of the presentation.

Ms. Li said she hoped she would have the chance to see the DPA show again.
